Cartomancy

Divination using cards of any kind — tarot is one branch; ordinary playing cards are another.

Cartomancy is the broad practice of divination with cards. Tarot is its best-known branch, but cartomancy also includes reading ordinary playing cards, Lenormand decks, and oracle cards — each with its own tradition and method.

Knowing the wider word is a useful reminder that tarot's 78-card structure is one system among many. What they share is the core move: laying cards down and reading meaning into the pattern they make.
