Upright
A card drawn right-way-up, expressing its meaning directly and outwardly.
An upright card is one that lands right-way-up from the reader's view. It expresses the card's meaning in its most direct, outward form — the headline reading you'd find first in any card's description.
If you read without reversals (a completely valid choice), every card is upright and the surrounding cards supply any shadow or difficulty. Even when you do use reversals, the upright meaning is where you start: read it first, then ask how the reversal shades it.
