Clarifier

An extra card pulled to shed light on a confusing or ambiguous card already in the spread.

A clarifier (or clarifying card) is an extra card drawn to shed light on one already in the spread that feels murky or contradictory. You place it beside the puzzling card and read the two together — the clarifier colours and focuses the first, rather than replacing it.

Used sparingly, clarifiers rescue a stuck reading. Used compulsively, they become a way of arguing with the cards until you get the answer you wanted — so most readers hold to a card or two and stop.
