Querent

The person a reading is for — the one asking the question.

The querent is the person a reading is for — the one with the question, whether or not they're the one shuffling. The word shares a root with “query.” When you read for yourself, you're both reader and querent.

Naming the querent matters because a reading is theirs: the cards describe their situation and their choices, and a good reader keeps the reading in service of the querent's own reflection rather than pronouncing over them.
