They look similar and often sit side by side, but tarot and oracle decks work in genuinely different ways.
Tarot and oracle cards are cousins, not twins. A tarot deck is a fixed system: always 78 cards, always the same structure — 22 Major Arcana and four suits of Minor Arcana — with centuries of shared meaning behind each card. Learn one tarot deck and you can read almost any other.
An oracle deck has no fixed size or structure. It might be 30 cards or 60, built around any theme the creator chose — moons, animals, affirmations — with meanings that live only in that deck's booklet. That freedom makes oracles gentle and immediate, but it means each deck is its own small language.
In practice, tarot rewards study and gives structured, layered readings; oracle cards give quick, open-hearted nudges and need no prior knowledge. Many readers use both — tarot for the full picture, an oracle card as a closing note. Neither is more "real"; they're just different tools.
